organize |ˈôrgəˌnīz| verb [ with obj. ] To arrange into a structured whole; order: organize lessons in a planned way. Ex: She organized her closet.

I recently hired my friend, Kristin Smith with the Clad Life to style me for multiple events including MegaFest. She has seriously been such a joy to work with. I feel like she understands my style and manages to find looks that will not only look great, but are in my price range! Kristin also does closet organization for her clients and finds ways to make their space seem as functional and fabulous as possible.  I recently asked her for a few tips to share with all of you, and she kindly agreed to share some insight!

Here are some closet organizational tips from Kristin.  Enjoy!

5 Closet Editing Tips:

  • Edit your closet constantly. Personally I edit my closet all of the time. I keep a shopping bag in my closet and when I’m deciding on a look and come across something I won’t wear I put it in the bag. Once it’s full I take it to consignment or donation depending on the quality.
  • Do an overall edit once per year. I like to go through everything in my clients wardrobe once per year. Don’t be afraid to make room for things you love by getting rid of things your like. If you will always wear something else over certain pieces then that those pieces should go. If you don’t like the fit of something and it’s not worth altering…it should go!
  • Organization is key to getting dressed every day. If you can’t find it you cant wear it. An organized closet is one that is efficient. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and wear the same things over and over out of convenience. Organizing your wardrobe will ease the variety and decision making process day to day and especially when limited on time.
  • Make as much of your wardrobe as visible as possible. If you can’t see it you can’t wear it. I despise dressers they’re where clothes go to die. Hang up as much as possible. Organize and edit any clothes not readily available by style/usage.
  • Archive or photograph sentimental pieces. I don’t think you should keep sentimental items, i.e. wedding dress, favorite high school jeans, etc in your every day wardrobe. If it’s something special like a wedding dress it needs to be properly cleaned and sealed to stay fresh. Bibbentuckers in Dallas does a great job with this. If it’s something less valuable take a photo or put it in a storage.

Organization products:

  1. Anything Clear or Lucite: I cant reiterate enough how important it is to see your clothes. We forget what we have. For many of my clients we keep photo logs of looks I have put together. With so much going on who can keep a catalog of everything they own in their mind? If you do store things like sweaters, accessories, or shoes for example make sure the storage containers are translucent for visual purposes. Check out this link for great products from The Container Store.
  2. Hangers: Felt Hangers are the best for holding on to clothes and take up the least amount of room. Wooden hangers can be bulky and plastic hangers don’t always keep the best form for clothes. You can also purchase attachable clips for felt hangers shorts skirts or other items that are not secured with regular hangers. Bed Bath and Beyond hangers and
     Hanger clips
  3. Other Hangers: Boot Hangers (high boots) &  Cedar Hangers for furs and coats
  4. Label: If you have a lot of pieces in storage containers you should label containers to identify what is in them. It can be a descriptive as a photo of the time or even just a label identifying the exact or types of items in the container.
