Pilates |pɪˈlɑːtiːz|nouna system of exercises using special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness: this quest for better training has led many dancers to Pilates | [ as modifier ] : the Pilates method.

If you know me, you know that I am very health conscious and love to stay active through different forms of exercise and weight training. Recently, I’ve started getting into the art of Pilates through the reformer, tower and mat classes. I LOVE the way my body is feeling, and had to share my latest favorite workout with you!

I love the way I feel when I exercise regularly, but there is something different about the Pilates methods that relax and calm my mind and body while still giving me a full body workout. I’ve been attending classes at Classic Pilates in downtown Dallas with my instructor and friend, Alicia Haynes, and I’ve never felt better.

I chose to attend Classic Pilates classes because they are known to honor the original Pilates teachings and principles created by founder Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s. Pilates focuses on six principles that engage the body and mind through concentration, control, centering, flow, precision and breathing.

The workout was originally named, “Contrology”, and was based on the idea of muscle control. If you’ve done any of the workouts, you’ll understand the need to concentrate and control every aspect of every movement to gain the most out of your workout. It might look like a simple workout when watching through photos and videos, but it is one of the most intense workouts I’ve ever done. I always leave drenched in sweat, but feeling very refreshed!

I started the Pilates workout to strengthen my core and gain flexibility. I’ve noticed an increase in both areas and have better posture when I walk and sit. We all sit for far too many hours of the day staring at our computers, phones and other work–completely unaware of our poor posture. Pilates can help with shoulder and back pain because the focus of the exercise is on stabilizing core muscles of the torso (which support the spine).

Most importantly, when I am doing Pilates, I notice an increase in mental clarity and a decrease in stress. Pilates triggers chemical responses in the body that release endorphins and improve the quality of your sleep (I don’t know a mother–or anyone for that matter, that doesn’t need more sleep!). The very nature of the workout encourages you to quiet your mind by requiring a single-focus task that engages you completely. In doing so, you are naturally creating a much-needed respite from your daily stress!

Pilates is known for body awareness and helping to prevent injury for athletes and dancers. I would encourage you to sign up for a 30 day trial to see how Pilates can benefit you. The workouts are designed to help people of all ages, body types and builds. Your instructor will create a workout specific to your needs and desired physical goals.

If you would like to join a Pilates class, feel free to contact my friend, Alicia, directly at pilatesbyalicia@gmail.com or www.pilatesbyalicia.com.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! I truly believe you’ll feel a difference after just one class. Remember, we only get one body–take care of it the best you can. You deserve it!

XO-
Sabrina

“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference. In 20, you will see the difference. And in 30, you’ll be on your way to having a whole new body.” – Joseph Pilates
