For several years, Field and I have been giving to a Dallas-based organization we support called SoupMobile. SoupMobile was founded in 2003 by David Timothy (lovingly referred to as “The Soup Man”) with a desire to feed and shelter the homeless right here in our own backyard.
David focuses on two main things every day of his life: bringing the love of Christ to people and serving the homeless. Each year, we support this ministry through giving to their clothing drives, Christmas events, and my favorite—the “Breakfast with Jesus” pancake breakfast.
For two years, the Equipped by Faith ladies have joined Field, the kids, and myself as we serve our homeless brothers and sisters by making breakfast for them. I always love this event because it gives me the opportunity to see and meet the people we are giving to by supporting this organization. I also love the impact it makes on my children as they get to see how truly blessed they are to have a roof over their heads. Baby Field loves to help with the pancake breakfast and always wants to give away his toys to needy children when he returns home after serving.
We may serve a few times a year as a family and with Equipped by Faith, but David and his team are reaching out to the homeless community 365 days a year. They are the real deal. In their first year, SoupMobile served 5,000 meals to the hungry, and today they are up to 200,000 meals every year!
With over 10,000 homeless individuals living in Dallas, the need is still very great. Not only does SoupMobile feed the homeless—but they are sheltering them too. The housing program at SoupMobile was created to take homeless men, women, and families off the streets, put a roof over their head, help them get jobs, and eventually help them to become working, productive members of society.
David said bringing the love of Christ to the homeless is so important because they are accustomed to being pushed aside. They don’t get hugs, smiles, or a friendly greeting very often. David likes to talk to them like the regular people they are, making them feel their value and worth. He believes that when he shares love with people, that love will stay with them just like God’s love stays with us.
That’s why David started a church for the homeless, designed to be a sanctuary and a place of restoration, hope, and healing for those who have lost their way. Every Sunday at 11am the church is filled to capacity with homeless church members. This is a place where they not only discover the love of Jesus for themselves, but they can find job placement, counseling, housing guidance, food, and clothing.
