active |ˈaktɪv| adjective 1 engaging or ready to engage in physically energetic pursuits : She loved being active in exercise!

In the present days of iPads, iPhones and personalized built-in car television screens, it can be difficult to keep our kids active in outdoor sports, games and activities. But staying active in these ways is extremely important when it comes to our children’s overall health, and it’s especially crucial to start these active behaviors while our kids are young!

Kids are naturally active, and love to run around and play. I love how my kids have broad imaginations, and can find fun in almost anything. In today’s society, children can easily become addicted to certain video games, television watching and iPad apps if we allow them to be. It’s our job as parents to keep our kids active and healthy now, so they will be active, healthy adults!

The best way to keep our kids active is to find an activity that they really enjoy. Summer is quickly approaching, and there are a range of camps and programs to sign our kids up for. Baby Field started showing an interest in basketball almost as soon as he learned to walk. His Uncle (and my brother) Chris is an incredible basketball player and coach, so I think that might have had a lot to do with it.

Chris and his wife, Clarissa, recently started a basketball program in the DFW area to mentor and train young athletes called, Dallas Elite Athletics. They have a desire to serve their community and to develop young, talented athletes. Chris has an incredible resume filled with years of coaching basketball and mentoring students. Every child that attends these camps leaves with not only better basketball skills, but with a challenge to develop their own character and personal growth.

Now I can’t get Baby Field to talk about or play anything else. He wants to dribble the basketball in the house and wants to dress like Steph Curry. (He even made me cut the strings off his basketball shorts because “Steph Curry doesn’t have strings on his basketball shorts!” *grin*.) What is most impressive to me, is that at only 3 years old, he is playing the game better than most kids twice his age. I love going to the courts to watch him dribble during practice, and run circles around the older kids! That’s my baby!

If your child is interested in the game of basketball, or just needs an outdoor summer activity, I want to encourage you to sign them up for Dallas Elite Athletics. Monthly memberships and individual sessions can be found on their website here. I really do believe in what my brother and sister-in-love are doing, and want every child to be involved!
